At CoLAB PS we believe in the familiar proverb attributed to the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, who lived sometime between the 4th and 6th century BC: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” It is still valid today, though it could be reworded to: “Give a man a fish and you feed him lunch. Teach a man to fish and he can set up a fishing business.” – meaning that long term solutions and skills transfer are better than short term treatment of business problems, and handouts.
The biggest achievement for any of our consultants is to enable companies to successfully integrate a sustainable project environment into their business, and experience the company becoming more and more self-sufficient and less dependent on the consultant. In other words, to teach companies how to fish.
To this end, we collaborate with our clients to establish a sustainable, lasting, project delivery solution that is best suited for their environment. We often hear everybody is striving to get best practices implemented into their business. At CoLAB PS we believe that best practical solutions are actually the only thing that can be sustained by any business.
There are an infinite variety of project management solutions. But none of them are applicable if they are not suited to the business, the best for the business, and practical for the business. We find the right solution mix to implement, given the maturity and environment of the business we are helping. Then, with the solution identified, we roll it out with strong Change Management to ensure the integration of the solution into the business.
How do we do this
By becoming part of your team, our consultants will lead your team in the development of a project delivery framework that best suits your company.
We will start with a predefined delivery environment, and deliver your projects while, jointly, we:

- Define project and portfolio management data and reporting requirements
- Develop your project category and lifecycle
- Define required governance and stage gates
- Define the training gap and develop the required training
- Define change management requirements
- Define change communication requirements
- Establish your Project Management Office (PMO)
CoLAB PS’s resources deliver your projects while your in-house resources get support and get up to speed. When they are ready, they take over the projects to an increasing degree, so that they become less and less dependent on CoLAB PS, yet delivering projects in a sustainable, repeatable fashion.
Certainly, this is counter-intuitive to traditional consulting. But CoLAB PS is a modern consultancy and like all good teachers, we ultimately make ourselves redundant.
